Obituary for Anita Brown

Anita Brown was born in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Katherine and Sylvester McCoy on February 2, 1957. Anita dated and married her high school sweetheart Lois Brown, Jr, they were united in holy matrimony on February 18, 1975 and together they were amazing parents to 3 children. Anita accepted Christ at an early age and later became a member of the Temple of Deliverance Church of God and Christ in March of 2006. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her youngest daughter Caroyln Brown, her grandson Christopher Brown, Jr, her siblings Charles Hankins, Barbara Hill, Gloria Morris and Patricia McCoy.

Anita was an exceptional student at Douglas High School and later went on to complete her nursing certification from Mid-South Healthcare Training Institute on July 29, 1988 in Memphis, TN. Anita was a caring and dedicated nurse for 28 years until her retirement in 2016. Anita was awarded several (employee of the month plaques and certificates) from her 2 primary employers over the 20 plus year career as a certified nurse at Mid-South Christian Nursing Home and Memphis Jewish Nursing Home.

Anita was very close to her siblings in which they all lived in very close proximity to each other even until this very day, they were neighbors. She and her sisters lived either on the same street or just a couple streets over and raised their children together. To her family, Anita was definitely a matriarch because she took care of almost everyone in the family. Her home was the foundation and called home by her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews over the years. She was so organized and very responsible making her the primary caretaker for some of her family members as well. Anita was stern but very loving and meant well in her actions even if we didn’t understand the tough love she frequently displayed, her heart was pure. She was wise and frequently expressed her thoughts and feelings in her journals with poetry all the time. She was self-sufficient, very handy and truly enjoyed doing DIY projects around her home.

Anita lived a modest yet full life, traveling frequently to visit her daughter in Atlanta and being the best nanny/grandmother to her youngest grandchildren Madison and Mason and her great grandson Malachi, who all kept her on her toes, adding life to her life. Although she was very involved in all of her grandchildren’s life, after retirement she had more time to be active with the youngest of her legacy.

She is survived by her life-partner Raymond Thomas, her daughter Pamela Brown of Atlanta, GA, her son Christopher Brown (Crystal), her step-children Toni Whittie, Mark Thomas and Jeremy Thomas. Her sisters Yvonne Williams, Jacqueline Stevenson and baby brother Cedric McCoy. Between Anita and Raymond, they have 27 grandchildren. Anita also leaves behind a host of several nieces, nephews, cousins, 3 great grandchildren, God-children, relatives, long-time friends and previous colleagues.
