Obituaries

He would be the first of three children born in the McCoy family. Ben graduated from Riverview Elementary School and George Washington Carver High School, where he was the battalion commander for the ROTC. He attended Tennessee State University from 1970-1972. Ben worked at Giant Food Stores and the Memphis Police Department for two years. He was a member of Saint Paul's AME Church in Columbia, TN, where he was a member of the choir. He moved to Rochester, New York to work at General Motors Corporation and later transferred to Nashville, Tennessee to work at their new Saturn plant, retiring February 1, 2009, after thirty years of service. Upon retiring Ben enjoyed bowling, working crossword puzzles, and watching his favorite team, "The Dallas Cowboys."
Leaving to cherish his memory are: his five children, Denise Keshay Johnson, Ben McCoy IV (Jacqueline), Christopher McCoy, Eric Thomas, and Patrick McCoy (Monae) of Ohio; his sisters, Kathleen Gates and Yvonne McCoy Sullivan; and one uncle, Lee Smith Andrew; and cousins, Richard and Valencia Dale (St. Louis).
Ben was very proud of having 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He also leaves 3 nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, November 18th, from 4–6 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Road; and funeral on Saturday, November 19th, 12:00 Noon at Holy Temple Ministry, 1228 E. Dempster Ave. Memphis, TN 38106. Interment Memorial Park Southwoods.
