Obituary for Calvin Murrell Brooks

Calvin Murrell Brooks, age 54, died December 21, 2022.

Calvin Murrell Brooks was born February 23, 1968 in Fayette County, TN. He was the last and thirteenth child of the late Mildred Brooks and James Olds. Calvin was named by his sister Ella Craig.

Calvin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Keel Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Perdy Moody. He was active in the Sunday school. A skilled basketball player, UIL basketball at Cypress Junior High and played AAU basketball Idlewild Presbyterian Church where he travelled to Chicago to compete nationally. He completed his basketball career as a point guard at Northside High School under the legendary Coach Marion Brewer where he graduated in 1986 though he continued playing for fun daily. He married Linda Killion, and from that union one daughter, Jaseudia Killion, was born. Following high school, he attended Christian Brothers College.

Calvin was affectionately known as Rell or the Kid in his family and community. Considered by most of his siblings to be his late mother’s favorite child, he was a rambunctious youth with a heart of gold. He was a people’s person that was instantly liked by all who met him.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jerlean (Marion) Collins. He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters-Jaseudia Sade Killion of Austin, TX and Stephen Michael Hines of Atlanta GA and Stephanie Michelle Hines of Durham, NC; a son-Stephen Michael Hines, and granddaughter, Zariiyah Marie Hines, both of Atlanta, GA; his siblings- Thomas ( Joyce) Brooks of Fayetteville, NC, Earnestine Reynolds, Horace Brooks, Louis (Virgie) Brooks, Davis T. (Mary) Brooks, George ( Bettie) Brooks, Lichester (Julia) Brooks, Ella Craig, Addie Grandberry, Lester ( Pamela) Brooks of Houston, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews.

“His lord said unto him, well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the lord.”
