Catherine Young, age 94, died September 15, 2021.

Catherine Young’s sunrise was on July 27, 1927 in Panola County in Batesville, Mississippi. She was born to Gertrude and Alton Cathey, Sr.; both deceased. She had four siblings, which are Mattie Campbell, Alton Cathey, Jr. (deceased), Arthur D. Cathey, and Arthur W. Cathey (deceased). She had seven children: Alton Smith (Alfreda - deceased), Deborah Cathey (deceased), Jim Smith, Jr. (Katherine), Robert Smith (deceased), Joyce Goodson (Curtis), Johnnie Young, and Stacey Young.
Her given name at birth was Martha Ree. However, her Aunt Ozell Wiley, said we’re not calling her Martha; her name was then changed to Catherine.
Catherine was a God-fearing woman who was a devoted Christian throughout her life. Her final words, the day before she passed, were “Oh, Lord,” which she said several times. As she transitioned in the early morning hours on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, she was cradled in the loving arms of her youngest son and caregiver (Stacey). At the time of her passing, she went quietly, without incident, and returned peacefully home to the Lord.
Catherine’s life, for her family and patients, was dedicated to being a compassionate provider, protector, and positive influence. She always gave her best to ensure that those she cared for received her love and attention. For herself, she continuously sought improvement. For example, she bravely enrolled in an inaugural nurse’s aide training program to better herself and pursue career advancement.
She might have gained her Angel wings, but her lineage will endure. Catherine’s legacy will continue through her grandchildren (Jody Coleman, Keith Coleman, Robert Coleman, Nikolos Goodson, Shaquita Goodson, Bobby Smith, Demiko Smith, Dwain Smith, Mark Smith, Toni Annette Smith-Watt, Jasmine Young, and Jonathan Young), numerous great grandchildren, their families, and friends.
Catherine will be immensely missed in this physical form. Nevertheless, her spirit will continue to surround, embrace, and love those who knew her, and were blessed to have her as their mother.
