Obituary for Charmaine "Big Char Char" Roman

Charmaine Roman, 61, died February 10, 2022.

Charmaine’s greatest love song, - her greatest love of all -, was her precious baby girl and only child, Skylar. Skylar was who Charmaine affectionately called, an “oopsie baby.” Prior to Skylar’s birth, Charmaine had only thought of herself as a forever auntie though this would not dictate the kind of mother she’d become. There are few examples of more dedicated and loving mothers. Charmaine talked about her birth story to anyone who would listen. As the story goes, she suffered with high blood pressure during her pregnancy and experienced a serious health scare during delivery. She experienced temporary blindness for multiple days. Her pregnancy challenges, however, created a fierce protector and advocate in Charmaine for her spirited daughter for the remainder of her life. She’d recite the poem, “Hey Black Child” to Skylar to build her self-esteem and encourage Sky’s achievement in school. She was Skylar’s very first teacher and created a “mini-me” who ultimately inherited some of the same talents and quirks as Charmaine. Ironically, they even laugh the same sometimes which is fitting considering how much joy the two like to spread to those they loved. Charmaine taught Sky the importance of family and connection. The two of them were inseparable. She celebrated all of Skylar’s accomplishments with such pride. Charmaine loved cooking and grilling which also became a favorite bonding time for the mother/daughter “besties.” They were known to vacation together and towards the end of her life, Charmaine and Skylar were reunited and were able to live under one roof together. It was one of the best times in Charmaine’s life to be back in the same city as her Sky. One must believe this short-lived opportunity to see each other every single day was God’s way of affording the two with a beautiful but unexpected finale that Sky would have to hold in her heart for the rest of her life.

Charmaine leaves to celebrate her memory, her devoted daughter, Skylar L. Freeman; five adoring siblings, Cedric Russell Moore, Don Michael Roman, Sr., Janice Louise Roman-Boddie, Natalie Yvonne Roman Cloman and Cheryl Marie Roman. She also leaves a beloved Sister-in- law, Carolyn Cloman Moore; a chosen bonus sister, Paula Johnson; and a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and close family friends.
