Obituary for Dorothy Mae McKinney
Dorothy Mae McKinney, age 69, died November 21, 2020.

Dorothy Mae Smith McKinney, affectionately known as “Dot”, was born on November 23, 1950 in Somerville, TN, to George Smith and Ollie Perry Smith. She was reared by her loving uncle and aunt, the late Rev. J. L. Ward and Mrs. Beatrice Perry Ward. Both sets of parents preceded her in death.

Dot decided to follow Christ at an early age. She united with the Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN, under the leadership of her father, Rev. J. L. Ward. She was also under the leadership of Rev. Joe E. Cooper, Rev. Ward’s successor and the current pastor of Prince of Peace.

She attended B. T. Washington High School and was a fun-loving student with a pleasing personality and a great sense of humor. Her favorite color was purple.

Dorothy was united in holy matrimony to Leroy McKinney, Sr., and to this union, eleven beautiful children were born. Leroy preceded her in death.

Dot was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. There was NOTHING she would not do for her family. She also shared a special bond of love with her Aunt Mae, her mothers’ last surviving sister. The two of them would often visit by phone or in person, where they would trade jokes, recall precious memories, and just laugh together and have a good time.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beautiful children, Maryland McKinney, Leroy McKinney, Jr., Gloria McKinney Smith, April (Levell) McKinney Jackson, Robert McKinney, Lee McKinney, Patrick McKinney, Theresa McKinney, Joyce (Jeremy) McKinney Wilson, Sherri McKinney, and C. D. McKinney, all of Memphis, TN; a sister, Willie Stein Reed, and a brother, Calvin Smith, both of Memphis; her loving aunts, Mary “Aunt Mae” Perry Knowles and Clara McKinney Chism, also of Memphis. She will forever remain in the hearts of her 35 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, whom she adored and loved dearly, and will be lovingly remembered by her many cousins, other relatives and friends.
