She was employed as a waitress at the legendary Harlem House for several years before becoming a teacher’s assistant at Alton Elementary.

She enjoyed reading, especially the morning and evening newspapers, which she read from cover to cover every day. She loved politics and watched C-Span regularly. She loved learning, and she knew a little bit about a lot of things.
Earnestine also loved playing Scrabble and cards, specifically Bid Whist. She was an avid sports fan who especially loved basketball and tennis. Earnestine was an extraordinary cook and her holiday meals – Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the Fourth of July – were a labor of love bringing together friends and family. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the social club, The RSVPs.
Earnestine is survived by her brother, Mack Nelms, Jr. (Dorothy) of Carson, California.
