Sister Gladys Marie Coins was born on March 10, 1933, to the late Joe Scott and Florence Morris in Eads, Tennessee. While continuing the Morris legacy, she was the oldest living granddaughter of Noah and Victoria Morris also of Eads, TN. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Gray’s Creek Baptist Church in Eads, TN, the oldest African American Church in Shelby County.
Sister Gladys affectionately known as “Squeekie” moved to Memphis, TN and graduated from Manassas High School in 1951. While at Manassas High she met Robert Coins who later became her husband, their union was blessed with four daughter and one son.
Sister Coins found her home when joining Pentecostal Temple C.O.G.I.C. and served on the #1Usher Board for over forty years. A superb usher as only as she could be served at numerous dignitaries’ funerals as well as other funerals throughout the city.
She worked several jobs before joining the Memphis Housing Authority. Sister Coins retired from the Memphis Housing Authority in 1997. After retiring she enjoyed exercising, attending seminars, visiting the sick, shopping and traveling the world as much as she could.
A PHEONMENAL WOMAN known for a giving heart, a provider, humor, love of cooking and honesty while being straightforward at the same time. Most importantly, Sis Gladys Marie Coins was a praying woman who believed and trusted in the God that she served!!
She was preceded in death by her brother, Hardy Seymore, sisters, Annie Pearl Beach, Evelyn Jones, and Victoria Woody, daughters, Gwendolyn Marie Jones and Beverly Gail Coins.
Sister Gladys lived a full life seeing three generations of off springs. She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory, her four devoted children, Robin C. Taylor, Karen Y. Brown, Nolan A. Coins, Sr. and Tina L. Coins. Twelve amazing grandchildren, Rela (Terrell) Neely, Elias Brown, Jr., Shenell Taylor, Andrea Monique Taylor, Nolan Coins, Jr., Millicent Coins, Perry (Unika) Taylor, Whitney (Jeffery) Goncalves, Anthony Marshall, Avery Coins, Jessica Coins, and Cody Coins. A host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends especially Sister Pastsey King, Sister Maria Graham and Sister Barbara Brevard.
