Obituary for Gladys Galloway

Gladys Galloway, 66, died December 5, 2022.

Gladys Marie Galloway, age 66, peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on December 5, 2022, at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital in Memphis, TN. She was born on May 31, 1956, in Memphis, TN, to the late Robert Lee Moore and Annie Pearl Moore, and was the oldest of five children. Gladys gave her life to Christ as a young adult and demonstrated His love to everyone. She was a devoted wife to Charles Galloway for 27 years and a loving mother to children Shmetrice, Shalonda and Kirby.

In 1990, she founded Just for Little People Learning Center (JFLP). What started as an in-home daycare for a few children, became one of the most prominent childcare centers in Memphis. Her business maintained a 3-star assessment score, the highest score that can be achieved by TN’s childcare star rating system, and she received the prestigious “Green Pearl Award for Education,” for excellence in early childhood education. She extended her care into the community and to her children’s families, often buying groceries, paying rent and giving clothes to parents in need.

Gladys acquired several associate degrees, but her personal goal was to become a certified educator. At age 55, while still operating JFLP, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Memphis and earned a Bachelors of Science in Education degree. She taught at several Memphis City Schools and with the help of her husband Charles, she transformed each classroom into "show-stopping" works of art. She was given the title of “Environment Specialist” and asked to support teachers in classroom organization. She retired as a first grade teacher from Downtown Elementary.

She was family-oriented and hosted many family gatherings. Her favorite pastimes were listening to gospel music, online shopping to enhance her sophisticated wardrobe, and watching reality TV.

Two loved ones preceded her in death: father Robert L. Moore and brother Robert E. Moore.

Left to cherish her memory are husband, Charles Galloway; daughters Shmetrice (Brooke) Mootry and Shalonda (Charles) Robinson, stepdaughter Laveda Galloway; son Kirby Jackson, stepson Charles “Chip” (Amia) Galloway II; mother Annie Moore; sister Flora Childres; brothers Melvin Moore and John Moore; grandchildren Tristian Washington, Kirby Jackson, Jr., Charlie Robinson, Treyshawn Jackson, Jada Robinson, Kobe Jackson, Kingston Jackson, and Kimora Jackson; great-grandchildren Zoe O’Neal and Charlie O’Neal.
