Jalyn Barrett, age 21, died June 30,2025.
Jalyn LaShaun Barrett was born on June 28, 2004 in Memphis, TN to John Barrett who preceded him in death and Jacquelyn Evonne Chears. Jalyn became ill and was hospitalized on the CV-ICU unit where he passed from complications of pneumonia at Methodist Germantown Hospital on June 30, 2025 at the age of 21.
Jalyn was a delightful young man with “a heart of gold”. As a child born with Downs Syndrome he possessed so many loving characteristics. He was a member of the Downs Syndrome Association of Memphis & the Mid-South. He was a regular participant in many functions held by the Association throughout the years.
Jalyn attended Central High School where he graduated in May 2022. There he was known to be kind and thoughtful by his teachers, school staff and classmates.
Jalyn was especially close to his mother with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. He was her constant companion and one of her greatest blessings. She will miss him more than words can ever express.
Jalyn is also survived by his siblings who loved him dearly, Shaunell LaKesha Chears, Antonio Javonne Reed; other siblings, Lorin Barrett, Shante Barrett (Sylandas) Jackson, Derrick Barrett, Darnisha (Edward) Herron Jr., John and Keonna Dawson.
He leaves his Uncle, Tyrone Chears, three Aunts, Denise Chears, Gwendolyn Chears, and Vernestine Chears Norman, one niece, Briana Nicole Reed along with a host of cousins, extended family, and close friends to mourn and carry his memory in their hearts forever.
Jalyn also leaves to cherish his memory a honorary sister, Fay Jones, and Aunts, Angela Reed and Kim Burse with whom he held a special place in their hearts.
Though Jalyn’s time with us was far too brief, his love, laughter, and gentle presence will remain with us always
