James was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Minnie & Robert Bridgewater on October 9, 1940. James was one of ten children born of this union and as such, was a great family man. He attended Manassas High School. He started working at Engleberg’s Grocery Store in the neighborhood as a butcher and remained there for 35 years. He was a well-known fixture in his neighborhood. Everyone knew Peter Rabbit’s kids and he loved showing his butcher’s knives to any and all potential suitors of his girls. He thoroughly enjoyed being in the midst of gatherings and could often be found on the porch talking to his friends and neighbors. James loved to cook and would fire up the grill at a moment’s notice. You see, being a butcher came with a lot of fringe benefits, and if “Rabbit” was cooking, people would start to come out of the woodwork.
James is survived by his children, Shelia (Bridgewater) Ellis, Verena (Bridgewater) Johnson, Kenneth Bridgewater and Preston Bridgewater; Sister, Dorothy (Bridgewater) Thomas; Brothers, Willie Bridgewater and Charles Bridgewater; Grandchildren: Shayna Ellis, Michael Ellis, II, Alexandra Johnson and Kandace Bridgewater; Great-Grandchild Kyran Ellis; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family extends our sincere thanks to his nephew, Charles Bridgewater, Jr. who was a great help to his uncle and was there when we could not be.
