Obituaries
Jesse Willie Atkins Jr. was born on September 29,1944 in Ripley, MS to the late Jesse Atkins Sr. and Elizabeth Atkins. He was preceded in death by Jesse Atkins Sr. (Father) and Helen Ruth Atkins (Sister).
Jesse accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Adkins Chapel United Methodist Church in Ripley, Ms.
Jesse and his family moved to Memphis in 1961. Jesse was a member of the graduating class of 1966 at Hamilton High School. Soon after, he began working for Cleo Wrap as a maintainance mechanic where he was employed for nearly 40 years.
In 1970, Jesse and Earnestine Harris were united in Marriage. Through this union, 2 children, Brandon Atkins and Gerald Atkins were born.
In November of 2010, Jesse began a new journey as he was called to ministry. His studies were rewarded in 2013 as he received his Bachelors of Science degree from Belhaven University. His ministry began to touch people of all ages and backgrounds. He would routinely visit the Penal Farm in Memphis on Sundays after service to minister to inmates. Jesse also served Faith United Methodist Church as the Minister of Prayer and Spiritual Advisor to Reverend Anthony Anderson (Director of Faith Ministries). He began working closely for the past 3 years with Rev. Jerry Wilson (Senior Pastor of Faith Church) assisting in leading the youth ministry and serving until his health began to decline.
Jesse touched others with his compassionate spirit and humility. He was dubbed a “prayer warrior” and would often visit and pray with the sick and shut in around the area. He would also pray with the students and parents of the Memphis Business Academy.
On March 10, 2019 at 3:45am at St. Francis Hospital Bartlett, Jesse made his transition as God called him from his earthly journey to begin his eternal rest. He certainly will be sorely missed.
