Obituary for Lelia J. Tutton
Lelia Jean Tutton was born in Starkville, Mississippi on July 23, 1942 to her mother Beatrice Prewitt Gregory who preceded her in death at her age of 3. She was raised by the late William “Bill” Gregory, Sr. and stepmother Annie Mae Gregory. She was the last of her siblings, preceding her in death were Liza Mae, Laura B, William Jr., Dorothy, Prewitt, Thomas, Mary Ann and Sam. She graduated from Moor High School. Jean was married to James Tutton and they had four children. They later divorced and remained friends.

Jean confessed religion at an early age at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Starkville, Mississippi. When she moved to Memphis, Tennessee she joined Smother’s Chapel C.M.E Church where she was an active member and choir director until she returned to her home church in Starkville. She returned back to Memphis and joined Ellis Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Mother Board and Missionary member until her health failed her.

Jean was employed for several years by Mr. & Mrs. J. C. Rainer III in Memphis, TN. When she returned to Starkville, MS she was employed for several years at Mississippi State University until she retired and moved back to Memphis, TN.

Jean leaves to cherish her memories her four children, Evelyn (James) Morgan, Patsy Bradford, Maurice (Josiephine) Tutton of Memphis, TN and Anissa (Richard) Mays of Calhoun City, MS; seven grandchildren, Courtney Talley, Jermaine (Natasha) Jackson, Lakeisha (Marlon, Sr.) Bobbitt, Bobby Bradford, Jr., Mercedes Tutton of Memphis, TN, Rashad Tutton of Powder Springs, GA and Ayesha Tutton of Beaumont TX; eleven great-grandchildren, Coreisha Talley, LaChelle Talley, Erin Talley, Fantasia Jackson, Jailah Tutton Jackson, Jaslyn Jackson, Kaylon Bobbitt, Marlon Bobbitt, Jr., Braylon Bradford, Bentley Bradford and Rashad Tutton, Jr; two step-sisters Betty Ann Montgomery and Delois McGhee; one step-brother, Billy Edwards and host of friends, nieces and nephews.
