Dr. Lowell Winston was such a person. Born on April 4, 1939, in LaGrange, Tennessee, he lived a life defined by faith, service, and educational leadership until his peaceful passing on November 8, 2025.
A devoted Christian, Dr. Winston began his spiritual journey at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church before later joining the Catholic community at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis. His academic and professional accomplishments were extensive: after graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, he earned degrees from Langston University, the University of Los Angeles, and ultimately a doctorate from the University of San Francisco. Over more than five decades, he served as a teacher, principal, administrator, and “school turnaround specialist” in districts across Ohio, California, Tennessee, and beyond. His leadership touched countless students and educators, culminating in his retirement in 2020 after serving as Operations Specialist for Head Start/Early Childhood programs.
Dr. Winston’s life was anchored by deep love for his family, especially his wife of 54 years, Ruby Etta Morris, and their son, David Winston. Remembered for his passion for people, education, and spreading joy, he leaves cherished memories to his son, siblings, extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, sister, and brother, Dr. Lowell Winston’s legacy lives on in the many hearts and communities he uplifted.
