Obituary for Melvin Dodson
Melvin Dodson, 70, died January 24, 2017.
Melvin Dodson was born to the late Joe Louis and Ida Mae Dodson on July 26, 1946. He departed this life on January 24, 2017, at 5:45 pm. Melvin received a hope in Christ at an early age and joined the Mt. Olive CME Church in Somerville, TN. He later joined Bethlehem Baptist Church and remained supportive until the end. He loved his Pastor, Rev. O. C. Collins, and his special treat was the Bethlehem Male Course.
Melvin received his education in Fayette County public schools and graduated from Fayette County Training School, Class of 1965. June 14th, 1965, he joined the U. S. Air Force, where he made a career of 24 years. During this time, he continued his education and received his Associate Degree from Park College in Baltimore, MD. He later received his Bachelor Degree in Business Management from Arizona State University, which led him into the fast food industry, working for Jack-In-The-Box and Wendy’s. In 1994 he moved back home to Memphis and received his teacher’s certification from the University of Memphis, and then he taught Social Studies in Memphis City Schools until his health failed in 2005.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 47 years, Geraldine Johnson Dodson; three children, Charolett Dodson of Memphis, Audrey Dodson of Chandler, AZ, and Melvin Dodson Jr. of Memphis; six grandchildren, Savanna, Leilani, Leonard, Chandler, Melvin III, and Elijah; one brother and three sisters, Velvet and Dorothy Dodson, Mary Parson and Evelyn Jones of Memphis, and Helen (Horace Campbell) of Somerville; seven brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; four aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and military friends from across the country.
