Obituaries
Micheal Paul Dean was born in Collierville, TN on May 7, 1963 to the late James Lee Dean and Hattie Mae Dean. Micheal gave his life to Christ at an early age at Mt Olive #1 Missionary Baptist Church in Collierville, TN.
Micheal graduated from Westwood High School in 1981. He attended Mississippi Valley State University where he excelled in academics and football. He was a member of the “Tons of Fun” offensive line, blocking for MVSU greats Willie Totten and Jerry Rice. Seven games into the 1984 season, Totten had been sacked only four times thanks to Micheal and his teammates. Micheal helped block for one of the most prolific passing attacks in NCAA history. In 1984, MVSU broke the record for most passing yards per game in a season (455.7) behind the blocking of “Tons of Fun”. Micheal’s extraordinary performance on the field led to his induction into the MVSU Hall of Fame – 1980s All Decade Football Team (OL). He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
After college, Micheal trained with the NFL. However, due to an injury, he started his career in Memphis, TN at the Mark H. Luttrell Correctional Center as a Correctional Officer. He was affectionately known as “Durty” by his colleagues. During his 30-year tenure, he advanced to several administrative positions – including Sgt to Chief to Interim Warden. This extensive experience led him to oversee the entire security department at the Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs, MS as the Chief of Security. Micheal loved this role and enjoyed working with his colleagues until his retirement in 2020.
In the fall of 2016, Micheal met the love of his life – his fiancée – Darlene Davis. Their relationship was full of joy, happiness and laughter. In creating precious memories, Micheal & Darlene entertained family and friends. Micheal could always be counted on to dispense wisdom, knowledge and advice in a humorous and non-judgmental manner. Michael’s philosophy of life – and how he approached every situation in his life – was to PLAN-PLAY-EXECUTE.
Micheal touched the hearts of many in his journey. He is preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Melissa Dean and his brother-in-law, Walter Scurlock. Left to cherish his memories are his sisters Patti Dean-Scurlock and Sonya Dean-Dawson (Kevin Dawson). Also, left to cherish his memories is his niece Lashondra Brown (James Jackson), his nephews Malcolm Brown and Marquis Brown; and his beloved bonus children Marquisa Booker, Jeffrey D. Booker, Jr., Jalisa Parker (Rodney Parker) and Anna Robinson. He also leaves bonus siblings, godchildren, grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and close dear friends. Michael also had a special bond with his neighbors Bronte “Tay” Givhan, Carey McShan, and Joy-Angel Givhan in addition to his beloved dog – Daisy “Suga” Dean.
