Obituary for Millicent Rene Royston

Millicent Rene Hayes Royston was born on March 3, 1957 to Marion Oscar Hayes Sr. and Geraldine Tate Hayes in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the sixth of eight children. She passed away peacefully at the age of 68 on July 11, 2025.

She professed her faith and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. She later joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church as a member of over four decades. Her faith was an influence in her actions and an inspiration for her service to others.

Millicent was the dedicated mother of two, Mario L. Lindsey and April D. Royston as well as a loving grandmother to Zion M. Lindsey, Raegan J. Clayborn, and Arisa R. Moreland-Woods.

Her cherished pastimes included writing journals and poetry, reading, visiting friends and family, taking pleasant walks on her favorite paths in local parks, and enjoying the glitz of games of chance. She glowed with pride in her kids and grandchildren, boasting of their accomplishments to anyone she could.

Millicent was a 1974 graduate of Manassas High School. She also graduated from Miller Hawkins Business College and Memphis Area Vocational Technical College.

She retired from Memphis Light, Gas, & Water Division following a nearly thirty-year career working in various positions, completing her career serving as a Customer Service Advisor. Prior to her employment with MLGW, she was employed at LeBonheur Childrens Hospital, Shelby County Health Care Center, and City of Memphis Hospital.

She leaves to cherish her memory two children; three grandchildren; three brothers, Marion O. Hayes, Jr. (Willa), Winifred Tracy Hayes (Jackie), and Ernest S. Hayes, Sr.; three sisters, Mary L. Royston, Carolin L. Irvin (Robert), and Phyllis M. Jones; sister-in-law Angela Hayes; two aunts, Aserlean O. Hankins and Ernestine H. Cobb; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other cherished family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Cleophas T. Hayes Sr.

Millicent was fiercely loyal and steadfast in her support to those she loved. If she was in your corner, you could always depend on her to be there for you. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
