Obituary for Pearlie Johnson

Pearlie “Pearl” Mae Flowers Johnson was the first of ten children, born to Dennis Flowers, Sr. and Carrie Dillard Flowers. She was born on December 10, 1937 in Greenwood, MS and left this earth to be with the Lord on July 20, 2025. Her parents, 2 sisters (Jessie Flowers Cooper and Grace Flowers Aldridge) and 1 brother (Willie Boyd Flowers) preceded her in death.

Pearlie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Early Grove Baptist Church. She later became a life-long member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church (1482 Pillow St.) where was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Esther Circle, Pickens Ensemble and Trustee Board/Finance Committee, and served as Church Secretary and Sunday School Adult Superintendent.

Her formal education began at Lester Elementary, continued at Hamilton Junior High School and she graduated from Hamilton High School, class of 1957. Pearlie continued her education by attending and graduating from Henderson Business College. She had a successful career, lasting over 30 years in the Memphis City School System (Lakeview Elementary School and Lanier Junior High School) before retiring. Pearlie later took a post-retirement position at Riverview Kansas Day Care Center for 18 years alongside side her close friend, Mrs. Diane Manning, before retiring once more.

Pearlie loved and valued her family and friends, especially her children, son-in-law (who no one could say anything bad about), daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also a “second mother” to many. She was a virtuous woman, loyal, dependable and a cheerful giver. She loved finding the JOY in life while always being ready to dance and referring to herself as “Divalicious.”

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Cheryl Johnson Turner (Jeffrey) and son Thomas Gene Johnson, Jr. (Jeanetta); siblings Lillie Mixon, Henry Flowers, Sr., Zola Morris, and Darrell Flowers (Janice) all of Memphis, TN, Dennis Flowers, Jr. (Alvina) and Michael Flowers, Sr. (Annette) of Los Angeles, CA, brother-in-law Herthel Cooper, Sr. of Connecticut and sisters-in-law Gloria Flowers of West Covina, CA and Barbara Johnson of Memphis, TN; 6 grandchildren [Neshellda, Jenisha, Champayne, Jasmine (Harry), Timara and Jahiem]; 3 great-grandchildren (Rhyan, Kynnedi and Harrison); 2 God children (Crystal and Rosalind) and a host of family and friends.
