Obituary for Shirley Ann Crawford McVey
Shirley Ann Crawford McVey was born on a very cold, icy Saturday morning on October 31, 1942 to the late Freddie Crawford and the late Beatrice Jones Crawford. She is the fifth child of seven children. Four siblings preceded her in death, Fred Douglass Crawford, William Isaac Crawford, Vertis Crawford, and Rowena Crawford Booker.
She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age at First Baptist Eads Church under the leadership of Reverend N.L. Threats. She continued her Christian education as a member of Belmont Missionary Baptist Church in Arlington, TN. Shirley’s devotion to her church led her to serve in multiple roles including the Education Committee, Mass Choir, Women of Purpose, Trustee, and in Vacation Bible School. She loved her church and was an active member until her death.
She met and married Ed R. McVey in 1966. They had one son who preceded her in death, Timothy Dale McVey.
Shirley graduated from Mt. Pisgah High School, class of 1960. She furthered her education as a graduate of Tennessee State University where she obtained her bachelor’s degree and ultimately her teaching certificate. She taught in Shelby County Schools until she retired in 1999. She continued her work in education as a substitute teacher until 2018.
Shirley was a charter member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Delta Mu Chapter in Memphis. She was a Diamond Life Member of the chapter she helped to start in 1981. She was a very supportive and active member of the sorority.
Shirley departed this life in the early morning hours of February 6th after a very brief illness. Her devoted husband was at her side. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Ed R. McVey; one sister, Jacqueline Clark; one brother, Kenneth Crawford, Sr. (Rachel); three sisters in law, Freddie Mae Crawford, Margaret Taylor, and Dorothy McVey Sayles; 2 brothers in law, Carl McVey Sr. (Drucilla) and Charlie B. McVey (Dorothy); three grandchildren, Stacia Dejon Macy (Scot), Shelby Angelic McVey, and Edward Alexander McVey; one great-grandchild, William Niccolo Macy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
