Obituary for Dora Purdy
Dora Marie Cursey Purdy, age 83, passed away on June 1, 2022. Dora Purdy was the daughter of to the late Dewitt and Estella Cursey. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 21, 1939. Dora completed high school at Melrose High where she was voted “Ms. Melrose”. She was also a majorette and drum major in the band. Dora married the love of her life, George Purdy, Sr. and from this union, they successfully raised five boys. Committed to academic excellence, Mrs. Purdy earned a Master’s degree from the University of Memphis and her Bachelor’s degree from LeMoyne-Owen College. Mrs. Purdy was one extraordinary educator who served with integrity for 33 years within the Memphis City School System. Mrs. Purdy was an active and important part of the community participating in many Local, Civic and International organizations. In 1991, she served as the President of the Compatible Bridge Club. She also shared a national sisterhood as being a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Mrs. Purdy was a devoted member of the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church until her health no longer permitted. Mrs. Purdy leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 49 years, George Purdy, Sr.; three sons, George Purdy, Jr., Kraig King (Clorie) and Bart Purdy; a host of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; her adorable grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law/loves, Carolyn McGhee, Delores McDowell, Donna Fitchpatric (Asell) and Dr. Carolyn Owens; one brother-in-law, Earl Purdy, Jr.; and a countless number of nieces, nephews, friends and former students. Visitations for Mrs. Dora Purdy will be Friday, June 10, 2022 from 5pm – 7pm at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Rd., Memphis, TN 38134 and Saturday June 11, 2022 from 11am – 11:55am at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, 70 N. Bellevue Blvd., Memphis, TN 38104 with the Homegoing Celebration immediately following at 12 noon. Burial will be on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Memphis National Cemetery, 3568 Townes Ave, Memphis, TN 38122.
