Obituary for Dr. Cheryl Davis Jones

Dr. Cheryl D. Jones was born October 10, 1946, in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Caleb and Reola Davis. She departed this life June 1, 2022, at Methodist University Hospital at the age of seventy-five. She was the youngest of eight children and raised by her parents in the community of Orange Mound. She spent most of her life living in Cherokee Heights neighborhood on Harris Avenue. Dr. Jones once attended Parkway Gardens Presbyterian, Greenwood CME, and was a member of Parkway Garden United Presbyterian.
Dr. Cheryl Jones was married to her high school sweetheart Fred Jones on June 11, 1966 whom she loved and supported until his last days. From this union, three sons were born: Maurice D. Jones, Sr., Dwayne A. Jones, and Deushawn D. Jones, Sr.
Cheryl graduated from Melrose High School in the class of 1964. She also graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in math from Tennessee State University where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. She received a Master’s degree in counseling from then Memphis State University, Masters of Divinity from Memphis Theological Seminary, and Doctorate of Ministry from Oral Roberts University. She was the first African American female dentist to graduate from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Science Dental School at Memphis and was a private practicing dentist for over 34 years. Dr. Jones has been a school teacher, pastor, business owner, youth team and cheerleader sponsor, community activists, and much more. Dr. Jones has received many awards and honors but in her later days enjoyed puzzles, knitting, quilting, and spending time with friends at the Orange Mound Community Center. Cheryl’s most loved position was that of a loving and supportive grandmother and great grandmother.
Cheryl was proceeded in death by her husband Fred Jones and leaves three sons Maurice D. Jones, Sr., Dwayne A. Jones, Deushawn D. Jones, Sr. (Rhonda) and a special nephew Shea D. Lee, brother in law Lawrence Jones (Martha), sister in law Elizabeth Jones, and was proceeded in death by her brother’s Carl Davis (Ollie), Clement Davis, Caleb Davis, Maurice Davis (Wilma), sister’s Janice Jeans (Curtis), Barbara Peterson (Ralph), and Fay Lee, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Cheryl was a proud grandmother of Maurice Jones, Jr., Chanetra Jones, Chanice Jones, Cierrion Kuykendall, Deushawn Jones, Jr., Deushea Jones, and Nekiva Young. She was also a proud great grandmother as well.
