Obituaries
Lois “Pete” Frieson was born in Locke, Tennessee to the late Georgiana Pullen and Wesley Frieson. His formative years were spent in Woodstock, TN with his grandparents, Ben and Willie Ida Pullen. He graduated from Woodstock High School. Upon graduation, he joined the Army to serve in the Korean War.
In 1955, “Pete” enrolled in Tennessee State University where he met and ultimately married his wife of 62 years, Doris Jean Lemmons Frieson. To this union, three children were born. Twin sons, Ronald and Donald and daughter, Lisa.
“Bro” as he was affectionately known by his family, was an excellent handy man utilizing the electrician apprentice skills he learned as a young man while working at the Navy Base. He loved to read. He had a library of books that fueled his love of gardening. He grew vegetables in his garden and gave them to family, friends and neighbors. His quality crops were so plentiful at one time that he sold them to a gourmet grocer in downtown Memphis.
He retired as a mail handler after 32 years of service with the United States Postal Service. He served diligently until his death as the treasurer for the Retired Mail Handlers organization. He was an active member of: TSUNAA Memphis Shelby County Chapter, Memphis Shelby County TSU Big Blue Club, Retired Teachers and Other Professionals, University Lane Improvement Association, Vand a past Southwest Region officer for National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Anthropos.
If you knew Pete, you knew that he never met a stranger. His circle of friends grew through his love for the city of Memphis and the Memphis Grizzlies. The Frieson Trio – Pete, Doris, and Lisa showed their support by purchasing a season ticket for the Memphis Grizzlies helping the city to secure the team. He was excited for basketball season to begin, attending the Grizzlies Kick-Off Luncheon and Grizzlies MVP events and was well known by FedEx Forum employees and Section 116A seat mates.
He and his wife were travel enthusiasts visiting at least forty-five of the fifty states. They cruised in Alaska, but his favorite cruise was in the Mediterranean enjoying the Greek Islands of Mykonos and Santorini, Rome and seeing Athens preparing for the Olympics. He talked about their hotel stay on Waikki Beach which provided beautiful scenery and relaxation. His most recent out of the country travel in March, took him to Cuba. In June, he flew to Atlanta to spend time with his great-grandchildren who knew him as “Papa Pete”.
Lois “Pete” Frieson was preceded in death by his sister, Geneva Frieson Smith. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife, Doris Frieson; three children, Ronald E. Frieson, Sr. (Rachel), Atlanta, GA; Donald E. Frieson (Naiema), Charlotte, NC; and Lisa M. Frieson, Memphis, TN; brother, Wesley Frieson (Bertha), Cleveland, OH; brother-in-laws, Arthur L. Lemmons, Floyd C. Rogers, Charles S. Smith; aunt, Katie Pullen; family friend, Melvin Jackson (Charmae); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
